What a weld symbol is standardizing, and how the reference line carries every instruction on it.

What are weld symbols?

Weld symbols are standardized graphics used on engineering and fabrication drawings to precisely specify weld type, size, location, and details. Following standards like AWS A2.4, they ensure clear communication between design, fabrication, and inspection teams across industries such as manufacturing, construction, and aerospace, helping maintain quality, code compliance, and structural integrity.

How to read weld symbols

The core of every welding symbol is the reference line, a horizontal line that serves as the base for all weld instructions, including type, size, and length.

A welded joint typically has two sides, so there are two possible locations for welds. For instance, in a T-joint between two steel plates, welds might be required on either side of the vertical plate. The welding symbol distinguishes these sides using the arrow side and the other side convention, shown here.

Symbol anatomy

Every position a weld symbol can carry information, numbered to match the callouts on the diagram below.

Basic welding symbols

Every combination AWS A2.4 defines, crossing location significance (arrow side, other side, both sides, or neither) with a weld type. A blank cell reads Not used rather than being left empty, so a missing symbol never looks like a missing image.

Supplementary symbols

Marks that ride along a basic weld symbol rather than replacing it: how far the weld runs, what backs it, and how its finished surface should look.
Weld-all-around symbol: a circle straddling the reference line where the arrow breaks away from it.
Field weld symbol shown twice: a filled flag standing on the reference line above the arrow break, and again below it on a second, mirrored example.
Melt-thru symbol: a filled half circle sitting on the reference line where the arrow breaks away from it.
Consumable insert symbol: a small square straddling the reference line where the arrow breaks away from it, labelled "(Square)".
Backing and spacer symbols, each a small rectangle straddling the reference line: the upper labelled "Backing (Rectangular)", the lower labelled "Spacer".
Contour: flush or flat
Flush or flat contour symbol: a short straight line above the reference line at the arrow break.
Contour: convex
Convex contour symbol: an arc bulging upward above the reference line at the arrow break.
Contour: concave
Concave contour symbol: an arc curving downward above the reference line at the arrow break.

Joint types

The five basic joint configurations a symbol's arrow side and other side refer to. Each diagram carries its own arrow side and other side labels.
T-joint: an upright plate standing on a flat plate, the weld symbol arrow pointing to their intersection, with "Arrow Side of Joint" labelling the near face of the upright plate and "Other Side of Joint" labelling the far face of the flat plate.
Lap joint: two overlapping flat plates, the weld symbol arrow pointing to the edge of the lower plate, labelled "Arrow Side Member of Joint", with the upper, overlapping plate labelled "Other Side Member of Joint".
Edge joint: two plates standing edge to edge, the weld symbol arrow pointing to the near plate, labelled "Arrow Side of Joint", with the far plate labelled "Other Side of Joint".
Butt joint: two flat plates meeting end to end in the same plane, the weld symbol arrow pointing to the near plate, labelled "Arrow Side of Joint", with the far plate labelled "Other Side of Joint".
Corner joint: two plates meeting at a right-angle corner, the weld symbol arrow pointing to the vertical plate, labelled "Arrow Side of Joint", with the horizontal plate labelled "Other Side of Joint".
